Often, the most striking features
in a building serve no function other than to look good.
That is the case with ceiling domes today. Ceiling domes
can appear in front rooms, dining rooms, and even bathrooms.
Although originally crafted in wood or plaster, ceiling
domes can also appear in polyester resin or fiberglass.
What does a ceiling dome look like?
Well, imagine a decorative bowl placed directly in your ceiling,
so when you look up you can see directly into the bottom of the
bowl (or the dome). They differ from ceiling medallions in that
they are usually larger, more ornate, and built right into the
ceiling. In fact, in older homes they were created even before
any light fixtures were chosen. For example, an owner would ask
for a ceiling dome and then later on attach a chandelier or other
light source.
Today, these ornamental pieces perk up many different homes and
office spaces. Often, they are used in combination with electric
chandeliers, but you will also see them painted with realistic
skylines. In fact, there is little restriction on the types of
