Ceiling Domes

It is believed that first architectural dome appeared in the 14th Century BC in the city of Mycenae, in Ancient Greece. The grandeur of the Great Treasury of Atria’s was quickly copied throughout Greece, and later spread to Roman and Byzantine architecture where it took on religious symbolism.

Throughout the ages, in Italy, Spain, Germany, England, and the United States, grand domed ceilings and great domed buildings sprung up as cathedrals, palaces, seats of government, and stately mansions. From the Pantheon in Rome, to San Pietro Citta` del Vaticano, to St. Paul’s Cathedral, to the Leipzig Market, regal domes have maintained a nearly 1500 year tradition of architectural perfection.

In 1866, the great cast-iron dome of the United States Capitol took its place among the great domes in history, and remains today one of the most famous man-made landmarks in America. Within that domed structure are some of the great domed ceilings of the world.

The Capitol Rotunda is a large, domed, circular room located in the center of the Capitol on the second floor. Its lower walls hold historic paintings; and a frescoed band, or “frieze,” depicting significant events in American history rings its upper walls. The Old Senate Chamber, a semicircular half-domed hall, located north of the Rotunda, was occupied by the U.S. Senate between 1810 and 1859. After the Senate moved to its present chamber, it was used by the Supreme Court from 1860 until 1935. Today, it is considered to be one the most dignified rooms on all of America.
